Aircraft Maintenance Engineering could be an exciting career if you are passionate, enthusiastic and looking for something different other than the conventional branch of Engineering.An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is a licensed person who carries out and certifies aircraft maintenance. As per the rules framed under Aircraft Act 1934 passed by Indian Parliament “N0 Aircraft can be released for takeoff without obtaining “Certificate of Release to Service” Issued by a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

In other words,Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is licensed person who carries out and certifies aircraft maintenance in order to release the aircraft for flight. The license is issued by DGCA Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India under the prevailing regulations and it is also recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Aircraft maintenance engineers act as a crucial pillar in the aviation department, as they take care of significant activities such as maintenance of the aircraft parts, identifying the issues in aircraft parts and fixing the same in order to keep that aircraft in airworthy condition. Such activities are not easy to do, as the engineers should have good knowledge of aircraft maintenance factors to undergo research and fix them. AME Course Details

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course is offered at institutions dully approved by Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of civil Aviation, Govt. of India. DGCA approves these colleges under the prevailing regulations i.e. Civil Aviation Requirementsderived from Aircraft Act 1934 passed by India Parliament.Presently in India these institutes are approved and regulated under CAR-147 Basic.

To become a successful aircraft maintenance engineer, DGCA Approved institutes are the best Gateway where the curriculum is guided and monitored by DGCA, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India to meet theNational and International requirements.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineers’ license is categorized according to the area of work. Like Mechanical, Avionics etc. Mechanical Stream is Called B 1 Category and Avionics Stream is called B 2 category. Further B 1 Category is categorized into sub categories as follows

B1.1 Aeroplanes Turbine-The license allows to work as maintaining the aeroplane with jet engine.

B1.2 Aeroplanes Piston-  The license allows to work as maintaining the aeroplane with piston engine.

B1.3 Helicopters Turbine-The license allows to work as maintaining the helicopter with jet engine.

B1.4 Helicopters Piston- The license allows to work as maintaining the helicopter with piston engine.

Mechanical Streams

A category B1 aircraft maintenance engineer’s license shall permit the holder to issue certificates of release to service following

— maintenance, performed on aircraft structure, including aircraft structure, power plant and mechanical and electrical systems. Replacement of avionics line replaceable units, requiring simple tests to prove their serviceability shall also be included in the privileges.

Mechanical engineer inspect & work on landing gear, accessories such as brakes, hydraulic system, pneumatic devices, fuel control pump, valves & air conditioning systems.

Mechanical stream is the discipline that applies engineering physics, & material science principles to design, analyze, manufacture & maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest & broadest of the engineering disciplines.

Mechanical aircraft maintenance engineer inspect, maintain & repair the mechanical component of aircraft. They work on all parts of the aircraft, except instruments & radio system.

Mechanical engineer conduct pre-flight checks of aircraft systems to detect & diagnose defective equipment in order to prevent malfunction. When changes are made, they put the aircraft through a series of tests to ensure it is functioning properly & in safe condition for flight.

Mechanical aircraft maintenance engineers work in a range of environments such as indoors in workshops or the hangar, outdoors on the airfield, or on the flight line where aircraft await departure.

Mechanical aircraft maintenance engineers can work long hours, do shift work, work on weekends & may be on call.

The Mechanical stream fields require an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, & electricity. In addition to those core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD),& product life cycle management to design & analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment & machinery, heating & cooling system , transfer systems, aircraft. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production & operation of machinery.

for category B1, unless the applicant provides evidence of appropriate experience, the group 3 rating shall be subject to the following limitations, which shall be endorsed on the license:

— pressurised aeroplanes

— metal structure aeroplanes

— composite structure aeroplanes

— wooden structure aeroplanes

— aeroplanes with metal tubing structure covered with fabric

 

Avionics Streams

A category B2 aircraft maintenance engineer’s license shall permit the holder to issue certificates of release to service following maintenance on avionic and electrical systems. This license can be attained in following categories:

— Radio Navigation (RN)

— Electrical Systems (ES)

— Instrument System (IS)

Avionics Aircraft Maintenance Engineers inspect, maintain & repair the various electrical/ electronic & structural components of planes & helicopters.

Avionics Engineers carry out routine pre-flight checks to ensure that an aircraft is safe & passengers will not be endangered. More detailed inspections are also carried out on each aircraft, where each component is examined & tested for damage & faults. Where problems are detected, aircraft maintenance engineers assess whether the component can be repaired, or if it needs to be replaced entirely.

Avionics Engineer work in the varies industry. Their work encompasses tasks related to designing & programming electrical systems on board spacecraft, aircraft satellites. Avionics engineers provide computer system support for all communication, navigation & guidance system & perform testing to ensure that those system are working properly.

An Avionics engineer focuses on the electronics systems used within it, i.e, the way it communication with basecamp, monitors fuel systems & reports on altitudes, temperatures & pressures.
